OLOMOUC IN TWO SHADES

The Chapel of St. Jan Sarkander

Built in 1909-1910, a Neo-Baroque chapel with a semi-circular apse, combining three areas: a rectangular vestibule, elliptic chapel and round presbytery. The niche in the outer wall of the apse shows the statue of St. Jan Sarkander (1576-1620), who was tortured in this place. Above one of the corners, there is a statue of St. Pavlína, the patron of Olomouc, whose relics are deposited in the church of St. Maurice. In the voussoir in the street-facing window, there is a portrait of Cardinal František Sal. Bauer (1841-1915), praying; the chapel was built while he was in office. The chapel was renovated in 1994-1995 in parallel with the canonization conducted by Pope Johan Paul II in Olomouc on the 21st May 1995.
