OLOMOUC IN TWO SHADES

The Archbishop Palace

The complex of two-storey buildings surrounding two courtyards was constructed in the place of an originally late-Gothic building, (of which only cellars have been preserved) and of an early Renaissance palace of Bishop Stanislav Thurza. After a fire in 1661 it was re-built (1668-1685) in early Baroque style. The design was inspired by Filibert Luchese and Giovanni Pietro Tencalla. The interior is rich in frescos in the stairways and in the public function rooms on the first floor. The Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria ascended to the throne here in 1848. In 1995 Pope John Paul II stayed here briefly.
