OLOMOUC IN TWO SHADES
St. Michael’s Church
It was founded c1260 as a church of the Dominican order. A part of the Gothic building can still be seen in the sacristy. The square tower on the south-west corner is late Gothic and one of its windows bears the date 1482. The early Baroque reconstruction was carried out in 1676-1703 by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla (1629-1702) and Domenico Martinelli (1650-1718). The statues of the Saviour and the Virgin Mary are by Ondøej Zahner from Olomouc (1709-1752). Four Baroque statues from the second half of the 18th century were placed on the northern side in 1904. St Michael’s Church is one of the most important Baroque monuments in Olomouc.
