OLOMOUC IN TWO SHADES

St. Wenceslas Cathedral

The Romanesque building of Bishop Zdík originally standing in this place was sanctified in 1131. Parts of it are nowadays covered by paving. Bishop Bruno von Schauenburg rebuilt the cathedral after a fire in 1266 into an early three-nave Gothic church, which forms the walls of the cathedral. The Renaissance chapel of St Stanislav was built in 1585-1591 during the reign of Bishop Stanislav Pavlovský. The elevated presbytery and three-nave crypt were added in 1616-1618. In 1883-1893 the presbytery was re-Gothicized and a Gothic Revival western façade and southern tower (100.65 m) were added by Gustav Meretta. The façade and southern tower were reconstructed in 2004.
